Taylor Swift may have bagged the biggest award of the night for her album 1989, but the ultimate star of this year's Grammy awards was rapper Kendrick Lamar. Not only did he score five awards, but he delivered a politically charged and socially relevant performance at the show. Paying tribute to the Black Lives Matter movement, Lamar delivered a powerful piece of performance art in a mash up of his songs Alright and The Blacker the Berry. He began the performance in handcuffs and chains, with his band in jail cells, and then fused rap, jazz, reggae and various African sounds. Lamar ended the performance with a map of Africa and the city of Compton imprinted in it.National Public Radio's Eric Deggans called it "a performance that woke up a sleepy #Grammys" and entertainment website E! Online tweeted that "Kendrick Lamar just SHUT. IT. DOWN. at the Grammys".Broadway's sold-out musical, Hamilton, which mixes rap, jazz and ballads and casts black and Latino actors as the US founding fathers, performed live from New York. The show won the best musical theatre album award and its creator, Lin Manuel-Miranda, delivered his acceptance speech in rap.In her acceptance speech, Taylor Swift slammed rapper Kanye West for the lyrics of a song on his latest album in which he sings about having sex with her because he "made the b**** famous".She said: "I want to say to all the young women out there: There are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame."But, if you just focus on the work and you don't let those people sidetrack you, some day when you get where you're going, you'll look around and you will know that it was you and the people who love you who put you there. And that will be the greatest feeling in the world."British singer Adele was a victim of technical difficulties throughout her performance of All I Ask . The singer could hardly be heard at some points and some of the song's most towering moments sounded completely flat.Lauren Hill and Rihanna, who were scheduled to perform, cancelled at the last minute.Additional reporting by Reuters..
