Human rights? Where?

March is Human Rights Month and Human Rights Day will be observed on the 21st, but our celebration is bittersweet.

Many rights as per our constitution have been violated. The spectre of racism, which we thought was buried with the apartheid system in 1994, has returned.

People are likened to an animal purely because of the colour of their skin.

The right to education is also shaken. Many students have dropped out of universities because of outstanding fees. Outstanding because they are so expensive - hence the #FeesMustFall movement.

These are matters that every peace-loving citizen should be concerned about.

Let's not drink away the 21st, but strive to make this a more democratic country.
