Terrified residents of Durban's violence-racked hostels have pleaded to the UN for help amid rising fears the bloodshed will not end.

ANC councillor and activist Zodwa Sibiya was shot and killed at Glebelands Hostel in Umlazi on Saturday night - the 62nd victim of ongoing violence in the hostel precinct since April 2014.

Seven people have been murdered at Glebelands since January.

Residents fear there will be no end to the attacks . At a press conference yesterday a resident said a hit list of 21 people was circulated recently.

The names of several of those killed this year were on the list.

The violence is being mirrored in KwaMashu, north of Durban, where seven people were killed at the men's hostel last week.

Glebelands residents called on the UN Human Rights Council to investigate the violence and their living conditions.

They say little is being done to safeguard them, claiming that measures like CCTV cameras, security fencing and the deployment of police have all been inadequate.

"We are appealing to the UN because we have been abandoned by our government. Our constitutional rights have been ignored by our government," said an activist.
