I founded bespoke tour operating company Africa Awaits Tours & Safaris in 2000, selling it in 2010 to change direction and explore writing and photography.A baby elephant at Nairobi National ParkHave you always been a big traveller? My initial exposure to travel was annual family road trips to the coast with padkos and picnics. I took my first flight from Bloemfontein to Cape Town aged 16 and was sold. Even when I'm not moving, I'm travelling somewhere through memories and books. Founding The Incidental Tourist has facilitated many opportunities. Every month I make discoveries that were before just a figment of my dreams. How did you get into travel blogging?I love writing and it was the perfect platform from which to share my passion. Over this time my focus has moved from the simple desire to travel to something that's deeper, and so I often take trips on which animals, conservation and giving back to the community are the focus.Your most memorable trip?Gorilla trekking in Uganda - something I'd dreamed of doing and that touched every part of my being. What makes a trip great?A sense that it matters. Whether opting for luxury, relaxation, a safari experience or urban walking, the moment it has purpose and you are consciously there, enjoying it, you're in for a great trip.Favourite travel blogs?Jodi, of Legal Nomads, at legalnomads.com; Kash, of Budget Traveller, at budgettraveller.org; Spencer Spellman, at whiskeytangoglobetrot.com, and Matt, at landlopers.com...
