'Apocalypse' star Rose Byrne on being human in a mutant world. In X-Men: Apocalypse, 10 years have passed since the events of Days of Future Past. For some of the mutant characters, including Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Hank "Beast" McCoy (Nicholas Hoult), life is more settled. Others, like Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) and Erik "Magneto" Lensherr, find the world a dangerous place. But everyone is affected when the powerful mutant known as Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) awakens from thousands of years entombed and asleep. Able to transfer his consciousness and with unlimited abilities, he sets out to destroy what he sees as humanity's corrupt civilisation and recruits four "Horsemen" (including Magneto) to aid his cause. Soon, Charles and the rest of the fledgling X-Men face the biggest battle of their lives.Rose Byrne returns to the X-Men franchise for the first time since 2011's First Class. She plays the smart, strong and mutant-friendly CIA agent Moira MacTaggert, who despite having portions of her memory wiped by Xavier 20 years ago so she couldn't reveal the location of his school, is still obsessed with those who have unique abilities. And she's a handy resource for information about the Apocalypse's history. Byrne recently worked on the movies The Place Beyond The Pines, the Neighbors films and Spy, in which she played a calculating villain. The actress explains how she had fun with Moira's look and what a spin-off for her character would be like .Moira's back - where do we find her when we meet her again? She's working for the CIA and she's lost her memory, so she doesn't have the advantage, but she's still smart and she's a specialist in the Apocalypse. She also provides some humour.Does she remember anything about Charles? She knows who he is - he's a famous guy and a champion of integrating mutants into society. She geeks out when he comes in.He has a history with her that she doesn't remember, so is that an interesting dynamic to play?James McAvoy is such a fun actor, so playful and good at exploring that stuff. He's got a cheekiness about him, so fans will appreciate the setup as being kind of romantic but also a bit tragic at the same time. It's been 20 years since the events of First Class. Back then she was fighting sexism. Have things changed for her now? It's not the 1960s any more. But she's been categorised as a woman trying to buck the system and there's something of a witch-hunt because she's female, so things haven't changed as much as she'd like. We're slap in the 1980s here, so what is Moira's look in this one?Moira takes inspiration from Working Girl , she's very shoulder pads and big hair and big glasses.Did you experience any behind-the-scenes fun that usually goes while shooting on these films?I was pregnant at the time, so I couldn't go out much. I'd get tired, I couldn't drink, but there's always fun when this cast gets together.Did you get to go into more of the action this time?I get a bit of action. It's always interesting to do physical work because it takes you out of your mind - it's a good acting exercise. What should fans expect from the movie?Bigger and better. It's a real penultimate moment with Xavier and Raven and Magneto again. If the chance came up, would you come back for another, or do you want a Moira spin-off?I want to see Moira day to day. Maybe we could do a domestic comedy about Moira and what she's up to at the CIA. I'd love that. - 20th Century FoxX-Men: Apocalypse opens in cinemas today..
