Bar Code: Search and you will be rewarded

THE GREAT WIZOO, CAPE TOWN: Newbies may find it a bit of a mission locating The Great Wizoo. The first time we tried, we almost gave up. From Belmont Road, you turn into Erin, which becomes Lower Burg. Then you turn into the Rygersdal Sports Club parking lot and there it lurks. Our first impression is of an enormous student union. There's a rough-hewn functionality about the furniture. There are the ubiquitous man-buns. There are pool tables and a balcony overlooking a sports field. To support the sports bar aspirations there's an enormous flat-screen TV and, most importantly, a hard-working bar in the corner. We'd heard the Wizoo's prices were reasonable, hence the popularity with students, but we were surprised at just how cheap it is. Burgers and pizzas around R50 a pop is not bad. It's better, though, with the drinking. The wine list is not that extensive, but there's very quaffable stuff here, all between R15 and R20 a glass. The cocktails - including Long Island iced teas, mojitos and strawberry daiquiris - are R40 each."Not watered-down swill," the menu promises, "but the real thing."The free Thursday night jazz jam sessions are another highlight. Check the Great Wizoo's Facebook page for details. Lower Burg Rd, Rosebank, Cape Town 021-686-3339, Daily 12.30pm to late-ish..
