Series: Schoolboy humour in a class of its own

22 July 2016 - 10:16 By Yolisa Mkele

If you used the characters from the movies Freedom Writers, Dead Poets Society and the Harry Potter series as the clay with which to mould your ideal teacher, there's a strong chance the end product would not be Alfie Wickers from Bad Education.

Played by comedian Jack Whitehall, Wickers is a history teacher who teaches his subject by having pupils re-enact the Battle of Verdun using their desks and pencils as props instead of reading it to them from a textbook. He's the bane of every administrator's existence, routinely helping his pupils cheat and enlisting them in personal matters that end in tomfoolery.Whether you love or hate the show is directly proportional to your maturity level. While Bad Education takes itself about as seriously as a cat in a top hat, it does contain some comic gems for the more discerning juvenile mind. It's clear that the script writers spent time with South African expats because Van der Plessis (played by Harry Peacock) is a side-splitting melange of Afrikaner male stereotypes. He's an ex-military lunatic with post-traumatic stress disorder whose homophobia is rooted in his frustration at not being able to verbalise his homosexuality. It's a caricature that's funny without being completely puerile and shows a familiarity with South African history that I was surprised the Brits possessed. Then there's Bonehead, a thick-accented Scottish hobo who happens to be a wonderfully pretentious theatre critic. He serves as an allegory for the UK class system - should you be inclined to think soberly about it.Comedies in this style often leave viewers feeling like they're watching a group of 16-year-old boys trying to out-joke one another. It's comparable to the utterly hilarious The Inbetweeners, which plays strongly to an audience that finds entertainment value in the slapping of scrotums and yelling of "chap slap!" Bad Education has some of that kind of humour but a little more thought has gone into the script. Its mix of oddball characters, adolescent humour and jokes requiring some general knowledge to appreciate, and it'smore adult than it would have you believe.Bad Education is available on NetflixBox PopsSUITS S6Who doesn't want to see another season of good-looking lawyers throwing around jargon and having sex?Season 6 of Suits is on Thursdays at 8:30pm on DStv channel 101MR ROBOT S2Track the life of this anti-capitalist hacker who has some serious mental issues.
