Not so fast, your number isn't up yet

Motorists can for hold their horses - there is no need to rush out to get new number plates yet. For days South Africans have taken to social media to express their concern over the punted new number plate system.But, says Alta Swanepoel, editor of Lexis Nexis Road Traffic Legislation, there is no date set for the implementation of the new system.This week it was rumoured that, if draft legislation is signed into law, the new number plates will have to be renewed every five years, and will come into effect next year.Swanepoel said the confusion arose from a freight trucking conference she was speaking at last week."It was during my presentation of some 60 slides that I spoke about two government gazettes, published in 2014 and 2015, that I said company owners must not forget about the proposed number plate changes which are up for public comment."Somehow from this conference someone came to the conclusion that the number plates were to come into effect next year."There is definitely no date yet for when these new number plates will be implemented."The Department of Transport could not be reached for comment...
