'Arms of war' found in suburban home

You would think that such an "arms cache" was meant to start a small war.But, the weapons and munitions, recovered from the garage of a 46-year-old Springs, East Rand, resident, were remnants of the suspect's dead policeman father's police career paraphernalia. The man is to appear in the Springs Magistrate's Court today.The suspect, according to police sources, was found with a rifle-fitted "launcher" used to fire teargas canisters and smoke grenades.A police source close to the investigation said the ammunition included rounds known as "stoppers", solid pieces of rubber the length of a hand used in crowd control.The man's brother is currently serving time for similar charges .The suspect's neighbours have expressed surprise at the raid,describing him as a quiet person who was involved in community safety programmes.Gauteng police spokesman Colonel Lungelo Dlamini described the find as "arms of war"."These included two .303 rifles with two magazines, more than 100 rounds of ammunition for different rifles, rocket launchers, police reflector jacket and a bullet-proof [vest]," Dlamini said...
