Tea and a bit of sugar please workers

Dear bosses: Let them have their caffeine and drink it. For many South African employees access to good coffee and tea is the most important thing at work. This is according to a recent survey that quizzed 12,000 people in the banking and insurance sector. The survey, conducted by Inspiration Office, an office furniture consulting company, found that 95% of those surveyed ranked access to coffee and tea as the most important thing in the workplace.Security and a healthy environment were also regarded as important to employees along with greenery, natural light, canteens and comfortable chairs.Inspiration Office managing director Richard Andrews said some of the results were "surprising" and proved that creating a productive working environment was not as complex as employers thought.Industrial psychologist Johan Landman said the results indicated the direction the world was moving in. "Because people can't choose their jobs, it's the small things that become important," Landman said. While coffee made the workplace better for most, those quizzed said bad bosses, noisy colleagues and smelly food were among their top annoyances.Andrews said bad bosses were often those in middle management who were hypercritical and prone to micro-management.He added that employees should be given the freedom to choose where and how they work."South Africans are very tolerant and a lot of employers exploit this. People need spaces where they can recharge. It will make people more productive," he said. The survey also found that 50% of those surveyed felt the lack of privacy was an annoyance, along with dreary office spaces, long meetings, dress codes and working hours...
