Le Clos, who started his career as a distance swimmer, used his trademark lightning turn and torpedo-like underwater swim to surge ahead before touching in 22.08sec. Briton Benjamin Proud was second in 22.76, Schoeman third in 22.80 and Tandy seventh in 23.45.Earlier, Le Clos beat Japan's Daiya Seto by more than a second to win the 200m butterfly in 1min 49.71sec, but it wasn't as easy as the margin suggested. He enjoyed a commanding lead early on, and looked as if he might challenge the 1:48.56 world record he owns. But Seto came at him over the second half, drawing almost level by the end of the penultimate lap.Once again Le Clos turned with the power of a looping rollercoaster to push ahead.Veteran Schoeman and Tandy - who between them have competed in the 50m freestyle final at the past four Olympic Games - were squeezed out of the medals in the 50m breaststroke.Myles Brown was the only other South African to reach the podium after taking second place in the 400m freestyle. The gala finishes today...
