Trump: Elections are rigged

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

Donald Trump sensationally claimed the presidential election was being rigged against him, questioning the legitimacy of the US political process.

The comments, made on Sunday, were interpreted by many as Trump preparing a strategy for if, as is expected, he loses on November 8.

In a series of tweets, the Republican said repeatedly that US media were rigging the election by hammering away at what he calls fabricated accounts of him making unwanted sexual advances on women.

One of his closest advisers, Rudy Giuliani, the former New York mayor, told CNN that Democratic districts are known for counting the votes of dead people.

"You want me to [say] that I think the election in Philadelphia and Chicago is going to be fair? I would have to be a moron to say that," he said.

"I'm sorry. Dead people generally vote for Democrats rather than Republicans," he added.

Trump's running mate, Mike Pence, attempted to cool the situation by stating they would both respect the will of the voters.

"Elections always get pretty rough," he said, adding the US has a tradition of "the peaceful transfer of power".

Tim Kaine, Hillary Clinton's running mate, said Trump was "swinging at every phantom of his own imagination because he knows he's losing".
