Sexpo: Women make grab

When a motorcycle accident left Australian David Ross bedridden, his career in conventional marketing came to an abrupt end - but an encounter with a "madam" proved to be his salvation. The encounter led the Sexpo founder to his calling - to "tease" and "titillate" millions at the annual South African "adult health and lifestyle showcase".It's been 20 years since Ross founded Sexpo and the event has grown from having 20 stands at its inauguration in 1996 in Melbourne to being a major international event.When he launched the expo in South Africa 10 years ago, Ross had 60 exhibitors - this year the number has almost tripled to a record 170.The event is on at the Nasrec Expo Centre, south of Johannesburg.Ross expects thousands to pass through the gates at Nasrec in search of "ideas for spicing up their sex lives"."We are not promoting promiscuity, but we cater to everyone, even those who are promiscuous."We have seen couples in their 20s and others in their 60s, females with their friends curious about new ways to keep their love lives exciting. We don't discriminate," he said."My intention has always been to bring all things sex-related out of adult stores and present them in a welcoming, comfortable, educational, entirely entertaining, safe and fun way."Sexpo is female-focused. Women are the braver of the sexes when it comes to confronting curiosity and embracing it," said Ross.How curious are South African women?"Women asked for more strap-ons this year because they want to experiment with their [heterosexual] partners. They are not shy at all about telling us what they want."This year's event includes information on penile implant surgery, breast cancer and HIV awareness - and a healthy serving of porn-star clothing, fluffy handcuffs and lubricants...
