Bikers spend big in Epic
Riders of the recent Cape Epic spent more than R95000 on their bikes on average.
Specialist mountain-biking website Tread cited the race's annual rider survey filled in by 1,141 of the 1,332 entrants.
The cheapest bike used in the gruelling five-day event last year was more than R30,000, and only 3.76% of riders spent between R30,000 and R40,000.
Nearly 45% said they spent more than R100,000 on their bikes and 17.44% paid more than R130,000. Almost 90% of the field spent more than R50,000. The average cost of a bike came in at R95661.70.
A decade ago the price was R28,001 and in 2015 it exceeded R50,000 for the first time, coming in at R60,752. In 2016 it was R76,052. Tread attributed the increase to a weak rand.
