The City of Johannesburg has announced a "serious failure" in the processing of more than 500000 of its customer statements for April.

Mayor Herman Mashaba said the council suspected that the system had been tampered with. "This is an automated system that has never produced an error of this magnitude before.

"I have issued an instruction to the city to engage with law enforcement agencies and the cybercrimes unit to investigate the cause of the failure," Mashaba said.

About 412 000 account statements were not issued, and 97000 of those issued were incorrect.

"We are working to ensure that all accounts are issued during the course of this week, and that accounts that were incorrect are rectified.

"This will result in certain households receiving two statements this month.

"We appeal to all residents affected by this confusion to proceed to make payment based on the historical average billing of their accounts."
