A wanted criminal was shot and wounded when he fired at a police officer in Evaton in the Vaal, Gauteng police said.

Two police officers, one a student constable, went to arrest the 29-year-old, wanted for alleged house-breaking and armed robbery, at a house in Evaton, Warrant Officer Molefe Mokoena said.

He first hid under the bed. When the two were arresting him he hit one of them with the handcuffs, allegedly grabbed the student constable's service pistol and fired a shot at the police officer arresting him.

"He aimed at his chest. Luckily he was wearing a bulletproof vest."

The police officer then shot him in the neck. He was currently under police guard in hospital.
