Spike Lee and Gena Rowlands are to be given honorary Academy Awards whilst Debbie Reynolds will accept the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have announced that they will be handing out the special gongs to the filmmaker and two actresses at the annual Governors Awards ceremony in November. And when Le was told about his award, which he has been given in recognition of his career achievements, he said: ''Get outta here!'' Rowlands will also receive her award for her long-standing career, whilst Reynold will be given the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. The recipients were chosen by the Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs and the board of governors from a shortlist offered by the Academy members throughout the year. Isaacs said: ''It's one of the most exciting meetings of the year because it's filled with a lot of passion. They are responding to the fact that the academy is recognising talent in front of and behind the camera that has been so instrumental in this business ... ''The Board is proud to recognise our honourees' remarkable contributions at this year's Governors Awards. We'll be celebrating their achievements with the knowledge that the work they have accomplished - with passion, dedication and a desire to make a positive difference - will also enrich future generations.''..
