Metro FM DJ Paul Mtirara, one of the radio stations’ star attractions, is suing the SABC for unfair dismissal after he was shown the exit door on Friday, according to a report.

Speaking to Sowetan through his lawyer Graham Moshoana on Tuesday, the smooth-talking Mtirara confirmed he aims to institute a law suit against the SABC, which owns the commercial radio station.

“My instructions are to sue. We believe that the SABC has breached the contract.

“We are going to the high court. Our first prize would be reinstatement or alternatively they would have to pay damages. He did not get a {verbal} warning or a letter, he got nothing,” said Mtirara’s lawyer Moshoana.

SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago confirmed that Mtirara’s employment contract with the public broadcaster has been terminated due to a “serious contractual contravention on his part” but could not comment further.

Sowetan reports that Mtirara's problems compounded when he returned from a business trip from the UK in October.

It appears his trip was not sanctioned by the station manager Sibongile Mtyali, whom Mtirara had a rocky relationship with.
