While South Africans across the country have rallied behind protesting students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Phat Joe has taken to his Durban-based radio show to lambaste the university's students for being the 'worst people in the world'.

Phat Joe runs a daily rant feature on his East Coast Radio show, entitled Worst Person the World. And on Thursday the controversial radio presenter gave the students at the university the title, following their behaviour during protests at the university's campuses this week.

  •

"You get told that there is an eight-percent fees increase and what do you do? You set the RMS building alight. You burn an exam venue at the Pietermaritzburg UKZN campus. You burn six cars. And you also lied to us. You said that you were unarmed, defenceless, peaceful and that you were shot upon by live ammunition," Joe said.

Joe says that the students should be grateful for the educational opportunities they are getting, especially since he had to get no less than three bursaries in order to study further.

"You have resources all around you. Your parent's have sacrificed for you to be where you are. Some of us had to get three bursaries to get to school. Three bursaries, I had to get! I had to study hard," he added.

  •

"This is kind of like your parent's refusing to increase your allowance so you burn their bedroom down. What is that?” he asked.

The university has suspended activities at all five of its campuses until September 19 in response to the protests.
