Musa Mseleku claims he too almost fell victim to bogus institutions.

This after veteran actor Sello Maake kaNcube and Skeem Saam actress Elizabeth Serunye were awarded honorary doctorates from Trinity International Bible University at the weekend.

Hours after announcing their “achievement” minister of higher education Blade Nzimande said Trinity International Bible University was not registered and authorised to offer any qualifications, including honorary degrees.

On Wednesday, Mseleku took to his Instagram timeline saying he too had been approached by unregistered institutions before but had rejected their offers.

The reality TV star and businessman shared a Facebook post questioning why a talent like Sello had never been recognised for his work by a legitimate institution.

“I fully understand what happened and why he accepted this. I have been approached before by these institutions but I turned them down. But that is beside the point, the point is this is one of the great men who has been there. Why it took a bogus institution to recognise his work? Now people are crying out loud. This is an indictment on you people,” he wrote.

Speaking to TshisaLIVE, Mseleku said he did not want to disclose the names of the organisations, but divulged what made him sceptical of the offers he recieved two years ago.

“I could see the it was more of capitalisation on your popularity as an individual plus marketing strategy for them,” he said.

“Most of these institutions that use religious beliefs to bestow themselves as professors and doctors you will find them all over churches. I refused because I am not too ambitious for those recognitions and secondly I realised that at the time I had not worked enough to get that recognition. I believe that the value of work should be justified by what one has contributed to society.”

Mseleku said he made a call to verify whether the proposal was legitimate before he turned it down.

"I even took time and called Dr Gugu Mazibuka, when they approached me. She is a lecturer at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and we both concluded that it was a no-no."
