No reason why you shouldn’t explore Mzansi as a tourist

The period from January to March 2012 saw a total of 2 267 807 tourist arrivals to South Africa - 216 031 more than the same period in 2011. This is a testament to the fact that South Africa is a tourist’s dream destination. The best part; for South Africans it is more affordable and accessible to travel and explore Mzansi.

It is here in South Africa where it doesn’t matter where you travel to; you are guaranteed a memorable holiday experience. In Mpumalanga, you could find yourself on an exclusive hot air balloon with magnificent views of the Lowveld and the Sabi River.

Travel a little further and you will be in Limpopo to see for yourself why this province is known as the land of myths and legends or you can get up close to the BIG FIVE.

Go on an unforgettable journey through our ancient and recent past at the Cradle of Mankind, or end up in Durban to enjoy the beaches, breathtaking drives and the unspoiled wilderness of the lush green scenery. South Africa is a place of varied cultures, heritage, vibey nightlife and adrenalin-packed adventures. For all of us, it is home.

You owe it to yourself to venture out of the house on the weekends and do something new, different and interesting. And, luckily, we have a few ideas for you.

Visiting natural attractions

In September South African National Parks will be giving South Africans free access to the national parks from 10to 14 of September 2012. Get in on the action, go and experience the bushveld and romance of safari in in our country’s parks.

Cape Town is known the world over as one of most beautiful places on earth. The Peninsula Mountain Chain which moves from Cape Point all the way to Table Mountain offers some of the most amazing sights that are a testimony to the wonder that is Mzansi. Many Capetonians regularly go to the slopes of Table Mountain on weekends and after work to unwind and catch-up.

The Karoo, Namaqualand and Kalahari represent some of the most scenic and rustic areas in the world – a region that is a hidden treasure and characterised by its beautiful landscapes that stretch as far as the eye can see.

For those adventurous characters
An adrenalin rush is an intense feeling that can only be experienced by being in the moment. You can get this feeling by participating in various activities such as microlight flying on the outskirts of Cape Town, quad biking in the picturesque Mpumalanga Escarpment area or bungy jumping the Orlando Towers in Soweto.

Thrilling excitement makes for an unforgettable experience that comes with abseiling from a cliff and with spectacular scenery as well as affordable outdoor adventure activities, the Eastern Cape, Gauteng and North West provinces offer this and much more.

The beauty of city life

Cape Town's Khayelitsha market offers handmade clothing, shoes, jewellery and much more. But more than that it is home to some of the most interesting South Africans who inspire you to do more and not give up. Other craft and flea markets in Cape Town include the Pan African Market, the Milnerton market, the Waterfront Art & Craft Market and the uber-trendy Neighbourgoods market at the Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock.

Johannesburg, the city of cool, has some of the trendiest markets. Arts on Main, located in the Johannesburg CBD is just what you need any day of the week when the various art galleries, fashion designers and bookstores are a hive of activity. The best time to visit this gem is on Sundays where you can sample fresh produce, organic foods and enjoy a delicious meal at their one-of-a kind restaurant – The Canteen.

Why not take the Gautrain from Johannesburg to Hatfield in Pretoria where you can leisurely enjoy lunch with friends or spend the night in the capital city of South Africa which sees some of the best South Africans artists perform during the week and weekends? If you are from Pretoria then it would be just as interesting to go from Pretoria to the revamped The Zone @Rosebank that is fabulous for people spotting.

If you are in the mood for a night out dancing you can make a stop at some of Johannesburg’s hot dance clubs in Melville or Liquid chef in Rosebank. Or for a 360 degree view of the Johannesburg city landscape, why don’t you check-in at Randlords which is situated in Braamfontein? You can round of your month with a visit to Katzy's in Rosebank which is a live entertainment venue that’s great for socialising with friends and family.
