A 10-year-old student killed himself Thursday in the Sao Paulo suburbs after shooting his teacher during class, Sao Caetano do Sul's mayor said.

Authorities said the boy entered the classroom, where another 25 students were taking class, and shot professor Rosileide Queiros de Oliveira, 38, who survived. He then left the room and shot himself in the head.

The boy, who was not identified, did not die immediately but succumbed after two cardiac arrests. The teacher was shot in the back of a leg and remained in stable condition.

The most dramatic recent school shooting took place in April in Rio de Janeiro, when a 23-year-old gunman identifying himself as a former student killed 12 children aged between 10 and 15.

Two similar incidents took place last month. In northeastern Alagoas, a man killed a goalie and a student as he chased someone else in a case possibly linked to drug trafficking. And in midwestern Mato Grosso state, a shooting took place at a school's athletic field, though there were no casualties.
