A California couple were walking their Australian shepherd when it suddenly took an interest in a plastic bag in a box near a rubbish bin.

According to SF Gate, when the couple, who were not named, investigated they found that the bag contained three five-week-old terrier puppies.

They took the pups home, bathed and fed them, and then took them to animal services.

“We see a lot of animal abandonment, but seeing cruelty of this type is pretty rare,”  said Rick Golphin, deputy director of Contra Costa County Animal Services.

Golphin says that the puppied may get fostered before going up for adoption because they're so young.
