THE KwaZulu-Natal cabinet wants parts of the province to be declared disaster areas and has asked the national government to release funds to rebuild infrastructure damaged by flash floods and hailstorms.

The death toll from storms that wreaked havoc across KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga on Monday rose to 28 yesterday.

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Zweli Mkhize said: "This is indeed a huge setback for us as it means resources must now be spent on rebuilding destroyed infrastructure and property."
