Kaizer Chiefs have been drawn against ASEC Abidjan - the club that Orlando Pirates beat to win the title of the continent's top club almost two decades ago - in the African Confederation Cup later this month.

Yesterday's draw in Cairo pulled Chiefs out against one of the best-known teams on the continent and set up a meeting between two clubs who share gold and black colours.

Chiefs will host the first leg at Soccer City on April 19, with the return leg in Abidjan a week later.

Chiefs dropped down to the Confederation Cup after being eliminated from the African Champions League last weekend.

Now they play two more knockout rounds in order to try and get into the group stages, which will start in mid-May on the same weekend as the Nedbank Cup final.

Pirates stunned ASEC in the final of the 1995 African Champions Cup, which was South Africa's only triumph in the elite continental club contest.

ASEC looked odds-on to win the title after holding Pirates to a draw in the first leg at Soccer City but a fortnight later were stunned by Jerry Sikhosana's goal, which has gone down in South African footballing folklore.

Pirates met ASEC again in the 2006 Champions League and after a 1-1 draw at home, were thumped 4-0 in Abidjan, which highlights the difficulty of the task awaiting Chiefs.

The club have been the most successful outfit in the Ivory Coast but their power has waned in recent years.

They last won their national title in 2010 and this season lie second to defending champs Sewe Sport.
