According to the African Wildlife Foundation, the mountain gorilla is the most endangered of the gorilla subspecies, with "fewer than 800 mountain gorillas [remaining] in the wild."

CNN's Errol Barnett will journey into the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda's northwest, one of the gorillas' last sanctuaries on the planet.

Barnett will see how Rwanda's conservation efforts compare with those of its neighbours -- DRC's Virunga National Park and Uganda's Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

The latest research into mountain gorillas' behaviour as well as why some poachers have had a change of heart will be explored in this episode about the majestic creature.

  • Inside Africa will be on CNN (channel 401), Friday 13 April at 6.30pm
