The nominees for the awards was made on Thursday afternoon and saw Game of Thrones grab the most nominations at 23 - only one shy of the 24 nominations it received last year.
The People Vs. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story scored the second highest amount of nominations, bringing in 22.
There were also multiple nominations for the likes of Fargo, Mr. Robot, American Horror Story and Modern Family.
The prestigious Best Drama Series category will be contested by The Americans Better, Call Saul, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, Homeland, House of Cards, and Mr. Robot.
Despite their popularity, fan favourites such as Orange Is the New Black, Lady Dynamite, Big Bang Theory and Broad City were all snubbed in the major categories of the awards.
Waiting for winter
They might be leading the nominations but it seems all is not well in the Game of Thrones camp. The show's creators recently revealed that they have had to delay the filming of the series' 7th season as they waited for more grim and cold weather to hit the set of the show.
“We don’t have an air date yet... We’re starting a bit later because at the end of this season, ‘Winter is here’ - and that means that sunny weather doesn’t really serve our purposes any more. So we kind of pushed everything down the line, so we could get some grim, grey weather even in the sunnier places that we shoot,” the show's executive producers David Benioff and D. B. Weiss told a UFC Unfiltered podcast this week.
