A photograph captured by The Citizen newspaper shows a Johannesburg metro police officer sitting on a shotgun with the barrel pointing towards their rear end.

The photograph, which was taken during the protests at the University of Johannesburg this week, has been described by Johan Burger of the Institute of Security Studies as "one of the stupidest examples of gun handling I’ve seen in a long time".

He added that it showed a complete lack of understanding and training in the safe handling of weapons.

Gun Free South Africa’s Pam Crowsley said the image raised serious concerns because "the police force is trying to build public confidence and such an example of bad behaviour by an officer destroys any confidence built".

Johannesburg Metro Police spokesman Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the incident would be investigated.
