Four men awaiting trial for alleged bank robbery escaped from the Boksburg prison on Tuesday, Gauteng police said.

“They allegedly dug through the wall of their cell and escaped [in the early hours of this morning],” said Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.

He said the men were considered dangerous. They were accused of involvement in more than 25 bank robberies in Gauteng.

Police had launched a manhunt for the men and warned members of the public not to confront them, but to inform the police if they saw them.
