There will be a protest on Wednesday on the sidelines of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) congress in Midrand against the “Department of Basic Education’s decision to continue with the writing of the Annual National Assessment (ANA)”. It was reported last week that the ANAs had been scrapped for this year‚ after months of disagreement between the unions and Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga‚ who insisted the tests would go ahead on December 1.A sample of ANA tests would‚ however‚ be conducted at about 2100 schools nationwide. The Department of Basic Education said this deal made been brokered between it and five teacher unions. However‚ the “five unions in the education sector” – the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union‚ National Professional Teachers Organisation of South Africa‚ Professional Educators’ Union‚ the National Teachers’ Union and SA Onderwysersunie – called an urgent press for Wednesday “to outline their position following the decision by the Department of Basic Education to continue with the writing of the ANAs”..
