Jozi's buses at end of the line, says Dlamini

Johannesburg Metrobus company is in financial trouble and is struggling to give residents a decent service. This was revealed by Metrobus MD Mavela Dlamini yesterday.He said the company's funding model put it at the mercy of the city council."From July, we are moving to a new funding model and will be able to replace the buses as we see fit."The city will pay us for services rendered and we will use the money to maintain the buses," he said.He conceded that the company's biggest problem was the age of its buses.Metrobus has 412 buses and more than 200 of them are more 10 years old; 11 more than 20.The standard in the industry is for buses to have a lifespan of 10 to 12 years.The ageing fleet has caused a lot of problems, Dlamini said, such as buses breaking down and being involved in serious road accidents.A Metrobus on Jan Smuts Avenue last month veered and hit another bus . Three people were killed and 66 injured...
