Going beyond the call of duty

Renowned for exploits such as delivering babies in the middle of a riot and rescuing rape victims, Cape Town's safety and security officers were honoured yesterday for going beyond the call of duty. About 200 people were praised for exceptional service.Traffic officer Girschen Grobbelaar, of Mitchells Plain, received a commendation for rescuing a rape victim from a vehicle in Parklands. A man was allegedly about to dump her unconscious body."It feels good to have recognition for what happened that night," he said.Constable Abdullah Fisher received a merit badge for delivering a baby amid violent protests in Dunoon, near Milnerton, in April.JP Smith, the mayoral committee member for safety and security, said surveys of council employees showed that recognition ranked third among factors contributing to job satisfaction, after fairness of promotion and quality of management."All who getan award also get one, three or five days off, which they can cash in if they prefer.
