A manhunt was underway for two armed robbers who broke into Crime Line head Yusuf Abramjee's home in Erasmia, west of Pretoria, on Friday, police said.

The robbers first targeted another house in nearby Senorita Street but were interrupted by police, Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said.

"They fled the scene and left a blue Mercedes Benz."

In the car, which was reported stolen in the area earlier in the week, police found equipment used for housebreaking.

The robbers apparently proceeded to Abramjee's house in Johann Strauss Street, where they jumped an electric fence before robbing the Abramjees of a car at gunpoint.

"As they were driving out of the premises, they fired several shots, and a shoot-out with the owner of the house [Abramjee] ensued," Dlamini said.

"Police responded within a few minutes but the suspects had already fled."

Abramjee's car had not been recovered by 2.30pm, but police were following several leads.

No one was injured in either of the robberies.

Dlamini appealed to anyone with information about where the robbers could be to contact Crime Stop.
