If president Jacob Zuma lost his credit card and needed to borrow R100 for petrol, he may have a hard time of it.

Fewer than 250 - or less than 6.48% - of 3,828 people polled by a TimesLIVE website poll would lend him the cash.

While the poll is not highly scientific, it does show a very low level of trust in politicians.

EFF leader Julius Malema did slightly better than Zuma, with 11.15% of the online voters willing to lend him R100.

Former leader of the failed Cope party, Mbhazima Shilowa, also scored abysmally, with only 8.3 %, or about 317 people, trusting him with a blue note.

But Mmusi Maimane - parliamentary leader of the Democratic Alliance and a pastor - had almost 74%, or 2,832 people, willing to lend him R100.

Political analyst Somadoda Fikeni said the recent "theatrics" in a parliament had done little to engender trust in politicians.

"When people begin to witness the entrapment of power, that is when distrust begins," he said.
