Jukskei Super derby

31 March 2015 - 02:01 By Chumani Bambani

There have been few build-ups to the Jukskei derby between the Bulls and Lions in recent times that have drawn as much anticipation as the imminent contest between the two sides at Ellis Park this weekend. The Bulls are on the back of four successive Super rugby victories - last weekend they had a 31-19 win over the Crusaders. The Lions have rediscovered their roar after a confidence-boosting tour of Australasia, where they returned with three wins out of four matches. It has become a rarity for South African teams to emerge with an impressive record from a single tour to Australia and New Zealand, but Johan Ackermann's pride has done it.The side from Loftus Versfeld played their best match of the season in their win over the Crusaders, showing that they are improving with each match, following their defeats in their opening games of the season. This gradual progress saw them turn their fortunes around in the last four games which they have won. "It is always nice to see South African sides doing well," Bulls coach Frans Ludeke said about his side and his next opponents, the Lions."We both played some of our greatest rugby [at the weekend]. This is going to be a big week."Veteran Victor Matfield is often a massive influence on the field for the Bulls. However, the side from Pretoria may not be able to call on the 37-year-old for guidance against the Lions.Matfield will be rested, together with centre Jan Serfontein, in keeping with the agreement with the South African Rugby Union to manage Springbok players. The Bulls rested Matfield for the corresponding fixture last year. It cost them their chance at reaching the play-offs as they lost a game in which they were expecting a bonus point win.Serfontein, a late withdrawal replaced by Burger Ondendaal ahead of the game against the Crusaders due to a hip injury, will sit out this weekend too.Arno Botha, who was also withdrawn late at the weekend, will be out of action for at least a week while nursing a hamstring injury.Minor niggles to Jesse Kriel (hip), JJ Engelbrecht (knee), Rudy Paige (hip), Morné Mellett (back) and Trevor Nyakane (sick) led to the players being excused from training yesterday. They are all expected back today. The Lions are sweating on the fitness of lock Martin Muller and winger Sampie Mastriet.Muller (calf) and Mastriet (ankle) both limped out of the game with the Reds on Friday, adding concern for Ackermann. The coach has prioritised physical and mental freshness ahead of Saturday's match.
