This app's too cool for school

Parents no longer have to travel far or stand in long queues to submit enrolment applications at schools - they can now use their smartphones. A new web-based app, which allows parents to apply and register their children at Gauteng schools, goes live today.Developed by the provincial education department, the app provides parents with a list of schools close to their homes or work addresses. It gives them a choice of three schools.Until now, parents have had to hand deliver application forms.Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said at the launch of the app yesterday: " It is costly for people to queue at schools to apply for spaces. An electronic platform such as this means they don't need to take a day off work to submit an application."Now they can apply for schools at the click of a mouse from their workstations or on their smartphones.The registration period for the 2016 academic year opened on Tuesday. Parents can submit applications to schools between April 21 and May 26.Lesufi said the app would allow the department to plan and allocate resources better. He said no late applications would be processed in January.The department received almost 30000 late applications for 2015- double the number in previous years.Parents must apply for places for their children at schools close to where they live or work.The department has system links to the deeds office, Home Affairs, and municipalities so that information can be verified.The Western Cape education department, which opened admissions last month, introduced an online school admissions management information system this year to make it easier for schools to capture applications for places.The Western Cape system allows schools to share the information they have captured with other schools...
