Not knowing one's thoroughbred is a misdemeanour

Brendan Craven is only in Grade 7 but he has already secured himself a scholarship by spelling one word correctly: "prestigious". The 12-year-old pupil of Brynevan Primary School, in Bryanston, northern Johannesburg, won the Spell It South Africa competition last year.He was awarded a five-year scholarship to the metro's Monash University at the launch of the competition yesterday.Thousands of Grade 6 pupils will battle it out in the competition, now in its second year, to become the nation's spelling champion.The toughest word for contestants to spell last year was "thoroughbred".Second runner-up Angel Hlongwane, 12, of Soweto's Donaldson Senior Primary School, was one of those who fell victim to the word.She said "misdemeanour" was the easiest word for her to spell."The competition is fun and participants will enjoy it. I developed better spelling and my reading improved," Hlongwane said.Participating schools are given a list of 5000 words to prepare for the competition, which is expected to be held later this year...
