Opposition parties dying to take on Mbete in court

12 May 2015 - 02:08 By Aphiwe Deklerk

The Western Cape High Court will rule today whether three opposition parties can challenge Parliamentary Speaker Baleka Mbete in court. An application by Agang SA, COPE and the UDM was due to be heard yesterday but the state attorney said the three had not complied with the court's rule 16.The rule states that when a matter deals with constitutional issues notice must be given to all interested parties. The parties want Mbete to recuse herself from presiding over debates on motions of no confidence in the National Assembly. They also want a secret ballot vote during debates, so that ANC MPs can vote against President Jacob Zuma without the fear of losing their jobs.Mbete's spokesman Mandlakazi Sigcawu declined to comment. Agang SA MP Andries Tlouamma said: "When we win we will table a motion of no confidence so that we can remove this corrupt president."..
