Wrong bedtime could kill you

Getting too much sleep could almost triple the risk of a stroke among people with high blood pressure, a study has found. Those who manage less than five hours also have an increased risk of the deadly brain haemorrhage.Dr Oluwaseun Akinseye, of Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, and colleagues analysed about 204,000 US adults with high blood pressure using almost 10 years of data from the National Health Interview Survey.They found that those who regularly slept for over eight hours had a 14% chance of a stroke - almost three times the 5% risk for those enjoying seven to eight hours a night.Less than five hours meant an 11% chance of suffering a brain haemorrhage. T his compared to about 6% among short sleepers who got between five and six hours.However, the study did not prove that too much or little sleep caused the increased stroke risk. It is possible that those who sleep a lot or little did so because they were in worse health.The findings presented at an American Society of Hypertension in New York follow a study by the University of Cambridge earlier this year that that found people who sleep for over eight hours a day on average had a 46% higher than average risk of having a stroke.Researchers followed about 10,000 people aged between 42 and 81 for nine-and-a-half years. They found that people who slept longer than eight hours a day were at a 46% greater risk of stroke than average.Those who slept less than six hours a day were at an 18% increased risk.Adults tend to need between six and nine hours sleep to feel well-rested...
