Reiger Park toddler Cuburné van Wyk was killed 10 months ago‚ but his mother still can't speak about his death without weeping. Lezell van Wyk buried her head behind the witness stand‚ in tears‚ as she testified in aggravation of Nathaniel “Chicken” Mpoku's sentence on Friday at the South Gauteng High Court‚ sitting in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court south of Johannesburg.Van Wyk‚ who has two other children‚ told the court that she would like to ask Mpoku‚ 27‚ why he killed her son. Mpoku was convicted of murdering and kidnapping Cuburné‚ 3‚ last month. He was the last person seen with Cuburné on the day the child disappeared from Reiger Park‚ east of Johannesburg‚ in August last year. His burnt body was found at a nearby mine dump three days later. He had been strangled.“I was in court [when Mpoku testified in his defence] but I want him to tell me‚ the mother of Cuburné‚ why he did it.“Cuburné was sickly and I was still breastfeeding him [when he died]. That is why I haven't been able to find closure‚” she said.Van Wyk also said that she constantly feared for the safety of her other children. She said that Cuburné often played with Mpoku's two little sisters at Mpoku's home and that she knew his parents well.“I would never have thought he would do it [murder Cuburné]‚” she said.During the trial the court heard that Mpoku gave Cuburné biscuits at a soccer field in Ramaphosa Informal Settlement‚ Reiger Park‚ before leaving the area with the boy.Van Wyk said that Cuburné would have gone with Mpoku because he knew him. When prosecutor Annemarie Smith asked her what sentence she would like the court to hand down to Mpoku‚ Van Wyk was too emotional to answer and proceedings had to adjourn. After composing herself‚ Van Wyk told the court she wanted the maximum sentence imposed on Mpoku.Defence advocate Lumka Qoqo told the court that Mpoku would not testify or sumbit any reports in mitigation of sentence. Only she would address the court on behalf of Mpoku.Judge George Maluleke requested a pre-sentencing report from an expert saying the court should be better informed before handing down sentence.Sentencing proceedings were postponed to July 31 in order for the report to be prepared. - RDM News Wire, TMG Courts and Law..
