Rand weakens further against major currencies

There was still little in the way of good news for the rand this morning as the local currency weakened further against major currencies following disappointing trade data from China. China’s exports slipped moderately in May‚ while imports tumbled as the world’s second-largest economy was hit by weak demand at home and abroad.Dow Jones Newswires reported that exports were down 2.5% year on year‚ marking the third consecutive monthly drop.Imports slid 17.6% year on year after a 16.2% drop in April‚ reflecting a domestic economy that had seen anaemic growth despite government measures to prop up both the manufacturing sector and consumption‚ the newswires said. The blow from China’s trade balance follows the stronger than expected US nonfarm payrolls data on Friday‚ which saw the rand weaken against the greenback by as much as 30c.The US government reported May nonfarm payrolls increased by 280‚000; economists had expected 225‚000 new jobs.At 8.20am‚ the rand was at R12.6344 to the dollar from a previous close of R12.6049.Against the euro the rand was at R14.0166 from a previous close of R13.9884‚ and was at R19.2820 against the pound from R19.2323 previously. The euro was at $1.1093 from a previous close of $1.1098.Risk for the remainder of the day will be limited‚ with no market-moving data expected.Barclays Research said in an early morning note that rand weakness had been overdone in the short term. The research team said it expected the local unit to trade at around R12.40 to the dollar near the end of the second quarter. - RDM News Wire, BDlive..
