The first black Perigord truffle discovered in the Western Cape has been sniffed out on the farm Altima in Elandskloof, a valley north of Villiersdorp within the Anthonij Rupert wine portfolio. After six years of nurturing by Altima managers Coenie and Hanene Van Dyk, "their truffler aka Clyde the Jack Russell sniffed out the 200gm truffle in the brulé of one of the inoculated oak trees", said Woodford Truffles South Africa.Woodford Truffles said its dog trainers had been on the prowl for the elusive truffle for the past two years.Italian "truffle guru" Alessandra Zambonelli had predicted the imminent appearance of truffles in the area after a root inspection of the orchard trees this year. Clyde found it last month.The orchard would be monitored until the end of the winter harvest by Clyde and furry companion Bonnie, who would be joined by Zippy, the farm's latest addition .South Africa's first black diamond truffle was unearthed in Mpumalanga in January. ..
