Not in front of the victims

The director of Afrikaans film Dis ek Anna believes the Film and Publication Board "erred" in its classification of the film. Sara Blecher said she "completely did not agree" with the film's 18 age rating.The feature film, which made its world premiere at the Durban International Film Festival in July, was rated as 18 for language, violence and sexual violence.Dis ek Anna is a drama based on the sexual abuse of Anna Bruwer by her stepfather. In the film she calls herself Silent Anna, because nobody knew what happened between her and her stepfather.Blecher explained that for a film about sexual violence there was very little depiction of sex and that viewers would only see "one shot of a naked bum"."In many ways we made the film to give a voice to the victims of sexual violence, so to silence the movie in a similar way feels like a total tragedy."We believe the board has erred.
