Police fired stun grenades and arrested a student in clashes at Wits University yesterday as nationwide protests for free tertiary education entered a third week. During last week's #FeesMustFall protests more than 200 students were arrested. In the Western Cape alone about 100 students were arrested, the National Association of Democratic Lawyers said. The University of Cape Town announced yesterday it had made representations to the director of public prosecutions to have all charges against its students dropped.According to experts, there is no certainty that charges against students elsewhere - ranging from illegal gathering and malicious damage to property and public violence - will stick."There are some charges that should be dropped and some [students] who should be released on a warning," said Lorenzo Wakefield, a volunteer providing legal advice to students. "It is the prosecutor's choice."Seehaam Semaai from Nadel said it had made submissions to the director of public prosecutions in the Western Cape to withdraw charges against students and to mediate in other cases.Students who had been hurt or mishandled by the police had opened cases against them, she said. Students had been injured by rubber bullets and others had reported being assaulted.Police spokesman Vishnu Naidoo said: "The SAPS has taken a decision not to comment on or provide a blow-by-blow account of police action during the protests."Wits spokesman Shirona Patel said police had been allowed onto the campus yesterday to restrain protesters.
