Veteran trade unionist Zwelinzima Vavi says someone has been impersonating him and making damaging statements on Facebook which are being attributed to him.

A statement issued on his behalf on Monday stated: “Zwelinzima Vavi wishes it to be known that someone is impersonating him on Facebook and saying all manner of damaging things‚ including attacking the EFF and others‚ and he wishes to distance himself from the contents of these messages.”

In a tweet earlier‚ Vavi said: “Someone is running a fake account using my name saying all manner of things to drive a wedge between me and other organizations.”

In another‚ he said: “There are actually 4 fake Facebook accounts running in my name. The legitimate has my face and me & wife on the background.”

“I have no doubt that the administrators of that fake page are the same who compiled a bogus intelligence report on me and Thuli Madonsela‚” he stated in another‚ referring to the Public Protector.

Evidently‚ he must have tried to block the fake accounts‚ which is clear in another tweet which stated: “I have tried that for months - it's not giving me that option. Two fake accounts disappeared overnight but two remain.”

Vavi is currently the vice chairperson of the Millennium Labour Council and is a former General Secretary of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu)‚ one of the ANC’s tripartite alliance partners.
