Cops warn of muti con

Bergville police have warned of a scam involving the threat of a muti curse and targeting women who appear to be in mourning. This comes after an elderly women found herself out of pocket for R29000 after being conned in the Ladysmith CBD recently.Police said a man brushed past her‚ and “immediately afterwards a woman approached her and told her that the man had rubbed muti on her and that her money in the bank was now unsafe”.She was told that she had until midnight to react or “her money would no longer be available to her”‚ and was then convinced to withdraw her money and “the suspect offered to help her to keep the money safe”.She agreed and was taken by a man – whom‚ it was claimed‚ was a policeman - and two women to a bank in Bergville where the money was withdrawn. She also agreed to place her bank card and PIN number with the cash into an envelope so that it could be kept safe.“On the way back they left the lady at the entrance to Hambrook area and handed her an envelope‚” police said.“When she reached home she discovered that the envelope contained scrap paper. The suspects tend to focus their efforts on those who are dressed in black and appear to be in mourning.”..
