Top cop gunned down

Police are investigating the killing of a high-ranking and controversial Durban police official who was gunned down in front of his house. KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Brigadier Jay Naicker yesterday said Innocent Chamane - a logistics manager in the Durban Metro Police - was killed at about 7.45pm on Tuesday in the Bhekisisa area near Inanda Dam.Chamane, 52, who was off duty at the time of the killing, sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head and body.Hillcrest detectives are investigating a case of murder. No motive has been determined as yet, and no arrest has been made.Durban Metro Police spokesman Eugene Msomi could not be reached for comment yesterday.Chamane was dogged by controversy after he was linked to several scandals that prompted city manager S'bu Sithole to state early last year that the metro police force would be overhauled.Several metro police officers expressed unhappiness with Chamane and metro police boss Eugene Nzama. Nzama was placed on special leave for three months after calls for his removal by metro policemen, the taxi industry and unions, following accusations of nepotism and corruptionIt was reported in June that the situation at the Metro Police K9 Unit had reached the point of crisis, with shortages of dog food, dog shampoo and a large portion of the K9 force not being inoculated because of outstanding veterinary bills. Chamane reportedly turned away donations of dog food after the publication of the story. At the time it was reported that metro police had 28 dogs and 14 horses, with an annual budget of R700000...
