MTN plea for fine reduction

04 December 2015 - 02:31 By Reuters

MTN Group will hold yet more discussions with the Nigerian authorities to try to further reduce a fine imposed on it for failure to cut off unregistered users of its service, a source familiar with the dispute said yesterday. The Nigerian Communications Commission has reduced the penalty to $3.4-billion (about R49-billion) from $5.2-billion.It has given MTN until the end of the year to pay up."The fine is still big enough to cripple MTN's ability to invest in its network and that's what the further talks with the commission are about," the source said.MTN spokesman Chris Maroleng would not comment. ..
