SA commander to lead UN troops in DRC

A former South African special forces commander is to lead the troops serving with the United Nations' mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo‚ the UN announced. Lieutenant General Derick Mbuyiselo Mgwebi takes over as Force Commander of the UN Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the DRC. He succeeds Lieutenant General Carlos Alberto dos Santos Cruz of Brazil.Mgwebi has more than 35 years of national and international military experience and served as Force Commander of the UN Operation in Burundi from 2007 to 2011.The UN mission‚ with about 20 000 uniformed personnel‚ is "mandated to use all necessary means to protect civilians‚ humanitarian personnel and human rights defenders under imminent threat of physical violence and to support the government in its stabilisation and peace consolidation efforts"‚ the UN said.The conflict is mainly limited to the east of the DRC...
