Dire need, but social workers still jobless

Despite South Africa's dire need for social workers, 2 500 who recently qualified cannot find work. The country needs more than 66 000 social workers, but has fewer than 18 000.About 2 500 graduates were granted bursaries and have been promised jobs by the Department of Social Development since 2011, but are still unemployed.DA shadow minister of social development Bridget Masango submitted a memorandum to Minister Bathabile Dlamini on Friday, after receiving letters from desperate students.The memorandum calls on the minister to employ those social workers immediately. The graduates affected come from KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and the Eastern Cape.Ishe Muthanyi, a graduate from Limpopo, supports six people. He works at a car wash. "It has been terrible," Muthanyi wrote.Shaheda Omar, of the Teddy Bear Clinic for abused children, said: "Most social workers' case loads are ridiculously high and they have quick burnout. The department is training all these social workers and letting them sit at home while we are in crisis," Omar said.The department's spokesman, Lindo Nkomonde, said the department had not received a memorandum and could therefore not comment.He said, however, the problem was due to budget constraints. "The department acknowledges the challenges faced by social work graduates. The department prides itself that it has provided them with a skill," Nkomonde said...
